Pacnet's New Presence: Vietnam & Thailand

Just checked again the world's telecom wholesale news after weeks-long pause :-D. This is one of the interesting news: Pacnet tries to get closer with traffic sources, this time in Vietnam and Thailand. Currently, international & inter-regional wholesalers tend to reach more potential customers, not only those which belong the industry giants but also medium-size customers. This might be a visible effort to anticipate loss of traffic, since many nationally-strong telcos are able and currently tend to build their own infrastructure. Disagree ? You are free to comment! :-D

Subtelforum:
In April 2009, Pacnet obtained approval for a Type 1 reseller license, enabling the company to offer IP Transit, IP VPN and International Private Line (IPL) services in Thailand, enabling businesses across the country to connect with their partners and offices worldwide.

Despite the challenging economic conditions, Thailand’s bandwidth consumption continues to grow. TeleGeography has forecast the country’s international bandwidth requirements to grow almost tenfold from 43 Gbps in 2008 to 404 Gbps in 2013.
“To meet the huge bandwidth demand, we are also exploring landing EAC-C2C into Thailand, which will provide access to an unprecedented amount of international bandwidth on our next-generation subsea cable network”

Along with its burgeoning economy, Vietnam’s international bandwidth is forecast to grow aggressively. Latest research from TeleGeography puts Vietnam’s total international bandwidth usage in 2008 at 22.8 Gbps and this is forecast to grow more than 13 times to 302.4 Gbps in 2013.

“Through our partnership with FPT Telecom, a leading telecommunications service provider in Vietnam, we have established our first Vietnam PoP in Ho Chi Minh City which enables us to deliver our global network connectivity solutions not only into Vietnam, but also into Cambodia and Laos”

“As part of our strategic growth plans for the Indochina region, we are already looking to expand our presence to other cities in Vietnam over the next 12 months, and are also exploring landing our EAC-C2C subsea cable in Vietnam to provide the country access to Asia’s highest capacity subsea network,”

While Vietnam’s current broadband penetration rate is just under 3%, it has almost doubled its broadband penetration since 2008 and has a huge potential for future bandwidth growth. It is also an increasingly attractive destination for offshore services, with Gartner ranking it as one of the top 10 locations for offshore services in the Asia Pacific region.
